Under the 1500's Hood
One of the RAM 1500's most distinctive traits is its incredibly smooth ride. This is achieved with a class-exclusive coil-spring rear suspension. This type of suspension, as opposed to the traditional leaf-spring suspension, is better at limiting the feel of bumps and the harshness of rough roads. The RAM 1500 has a variety of powertrains available. The EcoDiesel, a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine, produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. It holds the distinction of being more efficient than all available pickup trucks. The EcoDiesel's high torque allows it to have a towing capacity of 9,200 pounds. Its estimate efficiency comes in at 29 mpg on the highway. The EcoDiesel, along with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 gasoline engines, is paired with RAM's TorqueFlite transmission. TorqueFlite is the only eight-speed automatic transmission offered in the half-ton class. The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine with variable-valve timing (VVT) puts out 305 horsepower, 269 lb.-ft. of torque and fuel economy of 25 mpg. If you go with the top-powered 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine, with fuel-saving cylinder shut-off technology, you should get up to 22 mpg, and a whopping 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque.
