New 2016 Ram 2500 at Lustine Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram for Woodbridge, VA

You need to tow, you need it to be safe, and you want it to be a higher-end environment in the cab for all involved.  The 2016 RAM 2500 is certainly strong in all of these areas. New in 2016 is the CNG fueled (compressed natural gas) with the 5.7 liter V8 engine extends to the regular and crew-cabs with rear wheel drive. The Laramie tier gets a little upgrade on its exterior. Amazingly, the heavy-duty RAM 2500 has real workhorse towing (up to 17,980 pounds) and hauling (3,990 pounds in truckbed) abilities. Not sure what you would need to haul much heavier than that and not just own a semi outright, but if you do, the Ram 2500 is here to get it done with its coil spring based rear suspension. While you're doing that, you'll be enjoying the convenience features of this model, like the available RamBox cargo management system which bedside storage compartments, an adjustable bed divider and also tie-downs.  Again, thoughtful and helpful of Ram to provide.

Under the 2500's Hood

Standard on most versions of the 2016 Ram 2500 is a 5.7-liter V8 gasoline engine that produces 383 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The 5.7 is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. A modified version of this engine that runs on compressed natural gas (CNG) is available, producing identical power figures to the gasoline-fed version. There are two optional engines for the 2500: a 6.4-liter V8 and a turbocharged 6.7-liter diesel-fueled inline six-cylinder. The 6.4-liter produces 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque and is backed by a six-speed automatic. The turbodiesel produces 350 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque when matched with the available six-speed manual transmission, or 370 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque with a beefed-up six-speed automatic. Depending on body style and rear axle ratio, the Ram 2500 is rated to tow up to 13,890-lbs with the 5.7-liter V8 (unless CNG), 16,320-lbs with the 6.4-liter V8, 16,890 for the manual-equipped diesel and 17,980-lbs with the automatic and diesel engine. Properly equipped, the maximum payload for the 5.7-liter is 3,060-lbs (2,350-lbs for CNG), rising to 3,990-lbs for the 6.4-liter engine but falling back to 3,160-lbs for the diesel. The 2500 is available with either rear-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive, except where only 4x4 only makes sense (Tradesman and Power Wagon models). The aptly-named Power Wagon has a modified front suspension, hill descent control, electronically disconnecting sway bar and locking differentials. I think that should just about cover most of America's hauling, crawling, and towing needs!

Design of Ram 2500

Take a deep breath and get ready for a lot of great combinations and options, never mind a ton of standard features here. The 2016 Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup has three cab styles: two-door regular cab, four-door crew cab and a four-door jumbo crew cab called the Mega Cab. The standard Ram 2500's got seven trims. The Tradesman and SLT are available on all three cabs, while the Big Horn, Outdoorsman, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and Laramie Limited versions can only be ordered on the crew and Mega Cabs. An off-road Power Wagon variant (crew cab/short bed only) can be ordered in Tradesman, standard or Laramie forms. Head-spinning yet? There's a lot of important, potential capabilities built in here, let's read on. The Tradesman comes with 17-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights and a lot more standard features. The SLT adds chrome exterior trim, 18-inch steel wheels, an integrated trailer brake controller, and power heated mirrors, to name a few. The Big Horn makes those 18-inch wheels out of an alloy, has a limited-slip rear differential and a 10-way power driver seat (with power lumbar). The four-wheel-drive crew cab gets a unique Outdoorsman trim, which adds tow hooks and a transfer case skid plate, a two-tone exterior, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment interface with satellite radio. The Laramie builds off the Big Horn and adds two-tone paint, more chrome trim (including the bumpers), projector headlights, a heated steering wheel and a 10-speaker surround-sound audio system. It also borrows the exterior mirrors and infotainment system from the Outdoorsman. The Laramie Longhorn adds to the Laramie with a spray-in bedliner, remote ignition, a full center console, a navigation system and HD radio. The Laramie Limited trim adds 20-inch wheels, additional chrome exterior trim, and the RamBox cargo management system. Ram owners just need more, so the off-road Power Wagon features unique 17-inch wheels, tow hooks, a 4.10 axle ratio with electronically locking differentials, hill descent control, and a burly power front winch. The Mega Cab is noted for extra legroom and reclining seatbacks. Interior storage is generous, with plenty of bins and pockets to supplement the dual gloveboxes. Cabin controls are within easy reach and comprehensible, especially in trucks with the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen interface. This is nice to see in trucks where the driver's focus should be safety and awareness, not distractions and compensating for design. Ram has stepped it up here and emphasized its importance, without getting in the way of actual truck usage and control.

Conclusions

Something this size and with this amount of power had certainly better come standard with safety features, and the 2016 Ram 2500 does just that. Standard safety equipment includes antilock disc brakes, front-seat and side curtain airbags, stability and traction control and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Power-adjustable pedals are available on all models except the Tradesman, and a rearview camera is available across the lineup. Not sure what would convince you to make this truck a real consideration, but if the engine power and trim level paragraphs above get any bigger, only the 2016 Ram 2500 is going to be able to haul them away! Do yourself a favor and stop off at the dealer this week and feel the raw power of this tough truck in person.
