New 2017 Jeep Cherokee at Lustine Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram for Woodbridge, VA

There are many, many reasons to look further into the 2017 Jeep Cherokee, and those who do will not be disappointed. This vehicle is one of the few that finds that balance between on and off trail capability, so whether you are looking for a fun commute into town or to really impress in the outback, this is a top player. All new for 2017, high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps are standard on all trim levels (excluding Sport), and two new Overland Packages are going to be available later in the year. For 2017, the popular Trailhawk model has as standard some admittedly deluxe options, like ventilated Nappa-leather front seats that are also heated, a power eight-way driver seat, remote start system, a universal garage door opener, a heated steering wheel, a power liftgate, Keyless Enter 'n Go, and much more. Also, for its first full year on the market, the Overland model is here with many features like a new Jeep steering wheel with Zebrano high-gloss wood trim, Berber floor mats, and even a standard Alpine audio system! And that's just the new stuff to the line-up, let's get into the backbone of this well-known and well-loved mid-size SUV!

Under the Cherokee's Hood

The standard engine for most models of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee is the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that sees 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. Optional on almost all, depending on the model, is a 3.2-liter V6 that gets 271-hp and spins 239 lb-ft of torque. Either way, a nine-speed automatic transmission is standard with both engines. Pick from either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with either engine, except for Trailhawk models, which are 4WD-only. Jeep offers two 4WD systems: the light-duty Active Drive I system, or the sturdier Active Drive II system. When the Cherokee is equipped with front-wheel drive and the 2.4-liter engine, it's EPA-rated at 25 mpg combined (21 city/30 highway). The V6 and front-wheel drive rates at 24 mpg combined (21 city/29 highway). The available towing package gives V6 models a powerful 4,500-pound towing capacity, towing is going to be no problem with that strength.

Design of Jeep Cherokee

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee is a five-passenger crossover SUV offered in five main trim levels: Sport (4x2 and 4x4), Latitude (4x2 and 4x4), Limited (4x2 and 4x4), Overland (4x2 and 4x4), and the Trailhawk. There are also three Special Edition models, including the 75th Anniversary Edition (production through Dec. 2016), the Altitude, and the High Altitude model. There is a ton of standard equipment on these models! The Sport includes 17-inch steel wheels, remote keyless entry, sliding and reclining rear seats with 60/40-split folding seatbacks, Bluetooth, an auxiliary audio input, an SD card reader and much more. The Latitude enjoys alloy wheels, roof rails, fog-lights, automatic xenon headlights, a rearview camera, LED interior lighting, upgraded cloth upholstery, a folding front passenger seat with a storage compartment inside the seat cushion, a 115-volt outlet and then some. The off-road-themed Trailhawk comes with the Active Drive II and also gets wider 17-inch wheels and all-terrain tires, increased ground clearance, a locking rear differential, hill ascent and descent control, skid plates, tow hooks, a larger driver information display with color graphics, satellite radio and Jeep's 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen interface! The Limited model magnifies its height with 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and ignition, a wiper de-icer, upgraded power-folding side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Overland includes safety with rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path alert, then moves into functionality with a power liftgate, cornering lights, acoustic windshield and front windows, a nine-speaker audio system with a bass-pumping subwoofer, ventilated front seats, and a power-adjustable passenger seat (with four-way power lumbar). That's a lot of features, and there are still many more to find out about as you explore the Cherokee!

Conclusions

All 2017 Jeep Cherokees include as standard front- and rear-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and front knee airbags, antilock disc brakes, and also stability and traction control. A rearview camera is available on the Sport trim level and helpfully standard on all other models. Cherokees with the 8.4-inch touchscreen gain access to the Uconnect Access system with remote door unlocking and stolen vehicle assistance, automatic crash notification, and emergency on-demand roadside assistance. The Latitude trim can get the optional 'Safety/Convenience Group' package, and the Trailhawk, Limited and Overland models can get the available 'Technology Group' package that adds among other things, automatic high beams, a forward collision warning and mitigation system, a lane departure warning system, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors and an automated parking system. In government crash tests, the Cherokee received an overall rating of four out of five possible stars, with four stars for total front-impact protection and five stars for total side-impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Cherokee the best possible rating of Good in the moderate-overlap front-impact, side-crash and roof strength crash tests. The IIHS gave a great score of 'Superior' for the Cherokee's optional forward collision mitigation system, after testing the 2017 Jeep Cherokee.
